Only sing when you're winking

MAN United star Cristiano Ronaldo could be popping up in the charts — by writing a song with his family.

The Portuguese “winker” will team up with his brother and sisters for a tribute to his late dad.

Ronaldo, 21, was distraught when Dinis Aveiro, 51, died last year.

He dedicated a goal to him during the World Cup — where he famously winked at team-mates after getting England’s Wayne Rooney sent off.

Now his sister Katie will release a one-off tribute record with the lyrics written by Ronaldo, his brother Hugo and other sister Elma.

Katie, 27, sings under the name Ronalda and has released two albums in Portugal.
She said: “I have to prove I can sing and that I’m not just Ronaldo’s sister. The public adore me for myself, not because of my brother.”

Dad Dinis was the kit man at an amateur team called Andorinha in Madeira, where Ronaldo first played football. He died hours before Ronaldo played a World Cup qualifier against Russia. Ronaldo — whose winking has made him the target of English fans’ fury this season — later said: “The death of my father influenced everything.

“I knew the pain would pass and that the most important thing was for me to continue with my work.”

Ferguson's Ronaldo request

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, who has an injured ankle, has been strongly urged by Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson not to play for his country next week if he has not fully recovered.

Ronaldo picked up an ankle knock in United's 1-0 Premiership win at Blackburn on Saturday but Ferguson said it was for the player to decide whether to face Kazakhstan on Wednesday.

Ferguson said: "Cristiano has a European Championship game, he's got an ankle knock, but he will decide in the best interests of the boy and the team.

"It's against Kazakhstan so you would have thought Portugal could handle that without Ronaldo but if he's got one of these injuries which is 50-50 I hope he doesn't play."

Ferguson has already had Gary Neville pull out of the England friendly in Holland in midweek with a recurrence of a calf injury.

Fergie: Ron has passed his diving test

15/11/06

CRISTIANO RONALDO has been cured of his diving habit, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

But the Manchester United manager fears some players will never learn.
Diving to win penalties and free-kicks has become the scourge of the Premiership.

Former United skipper, now Sunderland manager, Roy Keane last week blasted: “It drives me crazy.

“Some players are going down like they’ve been shot. They are conning each other.

“I’m glad I’m not playing any more.”

United star Ronaldo was prone to going down too readily in his first two seasons in England.

But Ferguson claimed: “We can see how Ronaldo has obviously developed and improved, simply because he has grown up.

“People at our club talk to him about it. That is the way forward. But there are some habitual divers out there who are never going to change, no matter what their manager says to them.”

Ronaldo, 21, has matured so much since his £12.24m move from Sporting Lisbon that Portugal coach Phil Scolari is grooming him to be captain of his national side.

“He has charisma and, though he is young, he has been learning quickly how to overcome problems within the team,” said Scolari.

“We are working on a leadership plan and Ronaldo is part of it. It is vital for the future.”

Ferguson knows that wiping out diving is vital for the game. But he fears the referees’ task is an impossible one.

“Referees are the people who can sort it out best of all,” he said. “But they also have the hardest job.”

Ronaldo talks of his stalker hell

November 20, 2006

SOCCER ace Cristiano Ronaldo has been stalked by a smitten Dutch beauty.

The panicking Manchester United winger called the club’s security men to his house after the girl repeatedly turned up at his door.

She had fallen for him on a trip to Holland — and followed him back to Manchester on the same flight.

Ronaldo, 21, told how his cousin Nuno answered his doorbell at 6am and found her on the step.

The £12million Portuguese star peeped through the window at his Cheshire home and recognised her from the plane.

He said: “It was a Dutch girl who had come looking for me without any suitcases or anything and was going round asking people where I lived.

“She told Nuno that she had travelled especially to see me.

“According to the girl, when I went to Holland, she saw in my eyes that she was the love of my life. I told her to come back in the afternoon.

“I spoke with her and with her mum on the phone. It was a very strange situation.”

The girl was persuaded to return to Holland but just two months later was back at his house.

Ronaldo told Portuguese sports paper A Bola: “At that point I had to do something. I called the club’s security and from that moment on I didn’t hear anything more from her.”

Ronaldo — who famously winked at Portuguese team-mates after helping to get Wayne Rooney sent off in the World Cup — said he had been a “scapegoat” for England’s defeat.

But he insisted: “It doesn’t bother me too much. At the end of the day my country comes first and if it were today I’d do exactly the same thing.”

Cris-miss comes early for Fergie

November 20, 2006

ALEX FERGUSON admits Cris-miss came early — as Cristiano Ronaldo fluffed the sitter of the century.

The Manchester United winger somehow spooned over an empty net from just four yards out.

And boss Fergie said: “It was an unusual miss but the ball just bounced up a bit. He will not miss that again.”

Fergie was just glad the howler from the Portuguese flier in the dying moments did not come back to haunt his pace-setting side.

The Old Trafford gaffer added: “At the end of the day we can put it behind us.” At least Wayne Rooney had his shooting boots on, netting twice to keep United three points clear at the top.

Skipper Gary Neville said: “There was some great play going forward but we missed chances.

“We are grateful we got two because it would’ve been a bad day if we hadn’t got the result.”
