Only sing when you're winking
MAN United star Cristiano Ronaldo could be popping up in the charts — by writing a song with his family.
The Portuguese “winker” will team up with his brother and sisters for a tribute to his late dad.
Ronaldo, 21, was distraught when Dinis Aveiro, 51, died last year.
He dedicated a goal to him during the World Cup — where he famously winked at team-mates after getting England’s Wayne Rooney sent off.
Now his sister Katie will release a one-off tribute record with the lyrics written by Ronaldo, his brother Hugo and other sister Elma.
Katie, 27, sings under the name Ronalda and has released two albums in Portugal.
She said: “I have to prove I can sing and that I’m not just Ronaldo’s sister. The public adore me for myself, not because of my brother.”
Dad Dinis was the kit man at an amateur team called Andorinha in Madeira, where Ronaldo first played football. He died hours before Ronaldo played a World Cup qualifier against Russia. Ronaldo — whose winking has made him the target of English fans’ fury this season — later said: “The death of my father influenced everything.
“I knew the pain would pass and that the most important thing was for me to continue with my work.”

Ferguson's Ronaldo request
Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, who has an injured ankle, has been strongly urged by Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson not to play for his country next week if he has not fully recovered.
Ronaldo picked up an ankle knock in United's 1-0 Premiership win at Blackburn on Saturday but Ferguson said it was for the player to decide whether to face Kazakhstan on Wednesday.
Ferguson said: "Cristiano has a European Championship game, he's got an ankle knock, but he will decide in the best interests of the boy and the team.
"It's against Kazakhstan so you would have thought Portugal could handle that without Ronaldo but if he's got one of these injuries which is 50-50 I hope he doesn't play."
Ferguson has already had Gary Neville pull out of the England friendly in Holland in midweek with a recurrence of a calf injury.

Fergie: Ron has passed his diving test
15/11/06
CRISTIANO RONALDO has been cured of his diving habit, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.
But the Manchester United manager fears some players will never learn.
Diving to win penalties and free-kicks has become the scourge of the Premiership.
Former United skipper, now Sunderland manager, Roy Keane last week blasted: “It drives me crazy.
“Some players are going down like they’ve been shot. They are conning each other.
“I’m glad I’m not playing any more.”
United star Ronaldo was prone to going down too readily in his first two seasons in England.
But Ferguson claimed: “We can see how Ronaldo has obviously developed and improved, simply because he has grown up.
“People at our club talk to him about it. That is the way forward. But there are some habitual divers out there who are never going to change, no matter what their manager says to them.”
Ronaldo, 21, has matured so much since his £12.24m move from Sporting Lisbon that Portugal coach Phil Scolari is grooming him to be captain of his national side.
“He has charisma and, though he is young, he has been learning quickly how to overcome problems within the team,” said Scolari.
“We are working on a leadership plan and Ronaldo is part of it. It is vital for the future.”
Ferguson knows that wiping out diving is vital for the game. But he fears the referees’ task is an impossible one.
“Referees are the people who can sort it out best of all,” he said. “But they also have the hardest job.”

Ronaldo talks of his stalker hell
November 20, 2006
SOCCER ace Cristiano Ronaldo has been stalked by a smitten Dutch beauty.
The panicking Manchester United winger called the club’s security men to his house after the girl repeatedly turned up at his door.
She had fallen for him on a trip to Holland — and followed him back to Manchester on the same flight.
Ronaldo, 21, told how his cousin Nuno answered his doorbell at 6am and found her on the step.
The £12million Portuguese star peeped through the window at his Cheshire home and recognised her from the plane.
He said: “It was a Dutch girl who had come looking for me without any suitcases or anything and was going round asking people where I lived.
“She told Nuno that she had travelled especially to see me.
“According to the girl, when I went to Holland, she saw in my eyes that she was the love of my life. I told her to come back in the afternoon.
“I spoke with her and with her mum on the phone. It was a very strange situation.”
The girl was persuaded to return to Holland but just two months later was back at his house.
Ronaldo told Portuguese sports paper A Bola: “At that point I had to do something. I called the club’s security and from that moment on I didn’t hear anything more from her.”
Ronaldo — who famously winked at Portuguese team-mates after helping to get Wayne Rooney sent off in the World Cup — said he had been a “scapegoat” for England’s defeat.
But he insisted: “It doesn’t bother me too much. At the end of the day my country comes first and if it were today I’d do exactly the same thing.”

Cris-miss comes early for Fergie
November 20, 2006
ALEX FERGUSON admits Cris-miss came early — as Cristiano Ronaldo fluffed the sitter of the century.
The Manchester United winger somehow spooned over an empty net from just four yards out.
And boss Fergie said: “It was an unusual miss but the ball just bounced up a bit. He will not miss that again.”
Fergie was just glad the howler from the Portuguese flier in the dying moments did not come back to haunt his pace-setting side.
The Old Trafford gaffer added: “At the end of the day we can put it behind us.” At least Wayne Rooney had his shooting boots on, netting twice to keep United three points clear at the top.
Skipper Gary Neville said: “There was some great play going forward but we missed chances.
“We are grateful we got two because it would’ve been a bad day if we hadn’t got the result.”

Ronaldo is put on the spot
November 25, 2006
CRISTIANO RONALDO will take Manchester United’s penalties following Louis Saha’s flop at Celtic on Tuesday.
The French striker missed an 89th-minute spot-kick that would have fired United into the next stage of the Champions League.
Boss Alex Ferguson refused to say if Saha would step up if United were awarded a penalty against Chelsea tomorrow.
But SunSport already understands Ronaldo has been given the job.
The winger showed his nerve when he converted the final spot-kick for Portugal to knock England out of the World Cup this summer.
Ferguson yesterday poured scorn on Celtic midfielder Neil Lennon’s claims that United right-back Gary Neville predicted Saha’s miss.
Fergie scoffed: “I think they got a bit excited after the game.”
But it is clear Saha cannot be risked so soon after his dramatic miss at Parkhead.
On Sunday, United owners the Glazers will make their first Old Trafford appearance this season.
Malcolm Glazer’s three sons Avi, Joel and Brian are due to attend.

Ronnie: I was born to shine
November 25, 2006
CRISTIANO RONALDO reckons he was born with his box of tricks.
Manchester United’s skilful Portuguese winger insisted: “The stepover is something I did as soon as I started playing football.
"I always tried to invent new dribbles, new moves.”
Speaking to Manchester United Opus, Ronaldo added: “I was born with my ability.
"Things would come into my mind and I’d try them.
"When I was young we didn’t have money for big presents but if I was given a ball I’d be happy.”
Manchester United Opus is a 35kg 850-page testament to the world’s most famous club.

Don't make me mark Ronaldo
December 22, 2006
OLOF MELLBERG is desperate to mark Wayne Rooney tomorrow — because it will be a lot easier than tracking Cristiano Ronaldo.
Aston Villa’s Swedish international has played the majority of his 201 games for the club as a central defender.
But with no other cover for the injured Mark Delaney and Aaron Hughes, he has spent the last seven Premiership games filling in as an emergency right-back.
Yet the prospect of being shown a clean pair of heels by Manchester United’s flying winger at Villa Park has left him sweating.
And he has hinted to boss Martin O’Neill that now might be a good time for normal service to be resumed.
Mellberg, 29, said: “It’s been all right playing at right-back but I obviously prefer playing in the centre because I’m more comfortable there.
“I used to play right-back for Sweden when I first broke into the international team.
“But that was a long time ago and I hadn’t played there for quite some time before this season.
“I guess I’ll be marking either Ryan Giggs or Cristiano Ronaldo on Saturday. But I’d rather it was Wayne Rooney because I played against him in the World Cup in Germany last summer.
“Giggs and Ronaldo are both world-class players. But there’s something extra special about Ronaldo.
“He’s very quick and skilful with the ball at his feet and wins a lot of free-kicks.”
Despite United’s surprise defeat at West Ham last weekend, Mellberg is still tipping Alex Ferguson’s side to edge out Chelsea in the title race.
The Old Trafford giants’ nine-point lead at the top of the Premiership has been cut to just two.
But Mellberg said: “I just think United have been very impressive this season and I fancy them to win the league. But this is a good game for us on Saturday because we need to get our home form going again — we can play this one with no pressure.”
RON SAUNDERS will make an emotional return to Villa Park tomorrow — for the first time in more than 25 years
The legendary former Villa manager, 74, is being honoured by new owner Randy Lerner as a tribute to leading the club to their last league title in 1980.
Saunders was also in charge when Villa won the League Cup in 1975 and 1977.
He has been a football recluse since shutting himself off from the game after being sacked by West Brom in 1986. But he admits there will be a special feeling when he returns to his old stamping ground.
He said: “I have not been back since I left over 25 years ago and I know that the ground has changed enormously. So I am looking forward to returning and seeing it for myself.
“I received a telephone call from the club saying Mr Lerner would like me to be there and I was very flattered and delighted to accept.
“When I decided to quit football as a manager I said I would never return to the game and I haven’t. I don’t even watch it on TV.
“That was my decision and I have no regrets. But this is a different situation and I’m looking forward to meeting the new owners of the club so I can wish them well. I am sure there will be a tingle run through me.”
Saunders, Portsmouth’s leading scorer for six successive seasons in his playing career, caused a sensation when he resigned as Villa boss just months after taking them to the title.
The same team, under his former assistant Tony Barton, won the European Cup the following season.
Lerner has revealed plans to recognise all of the club’s former playing heroes by building a walkway with the names of past legends on bricks in the Holte End.

He could still be £35m El Ron
January 31, 2007
CRISTIANO RONALDO’S agent insists he could still be heading for Spain this summer.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are ready to pay £35million for the Portuguese winger — even though Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson insists he is not for sale.
Ron’s agent Sergio Alves said: “When Real and Barca are involved the future is always open, not closed. Given a little bit of time the situation may change — let’s see.”
Fergie will be fuming at Alves’ comments because he has already banned Ronaldo, 21, from talking about a move.
Alves added: “There is not much we can do at the moment because United are making their position very clear.
"But you never know in these matters.”

We wouldn't sell Ron for £45m
January 29, 2007
MANCHESTER UNITED will refuse to sell Cristiano Ronaldo — even for a club record £45million.
Real Madrid continue to make overtures to the Portuguese star.
But United chief executive David Gill will keep telling them: He is going nowhere.
Asked what he would do if offered £45m for the winger, Gill said: “It would be turned down straight away.
“One benefit of being a private club, as opposed to one on the stock exchange, is we can take a long-term view. And we invest in our assets.
“As Arsene Wenger has said on many occasions, clubs are not banks.
“We are there to put on entertainment and play a top-class team. And there is no point having £35m or £45m if you can’t replace that talent.
“At 21, Ronaldo has had a great season and we believe the best is yet to come.”
Gill, though, conceded United will probably be unable to extend Henrik Larsson’s loan deal from Helsingborgs when it ends on March 12.
He added: “Henrik played for Barcelona and went back to Helsingborgs for family and other reasons, so I would have thought that is extremely unlikely.
“He is due to go back in the middle of March and we haven’t really discussed that yet, as we are focusing on the next few weeks. We will see what happens. I think it is a bit early.
"You can never say never and we will go through that nearer the time with Henrik and the club.
“I know for a fact that Alex Ferguson, Carlos Queiroz and all the players are very impressed with him in terms of what he can do, his attitude and how he has fitted in. And we want great players at the club.”
Rio Ferdinand has cautioned against the rising expectation surrounding Wayne Rooney.
But he admitted the striker’s sensational FA Cup cameo, which included a wonder strike as one of his two goals, came as no surprise.
Rooney, in contrast to wing wizard, Ronaldo, has been a muted force in United’s pursuit of glory this term.
Aside from a brilliant hat-trick at Bolton and an opening-day double against Fulham, the England star has rarely caught the eye. And for the first time in his stellar career, the 21-year-old superstar has even had some criticism.
The doubters, though, are now being silenced. A week after breaking a seven-game scoring drought at Arsenal, Rooney scored the goals which ended Portsmouth’s defiance and took United into the last 16.
His first was a tap-in, his second an absolute stunner.
Taking Gary Neville’s pass 20 yards from goal, Rooney swivelled before launching an audacious chip which soared over Pompey keeper David James, clipped the underside of the bar and bounced into the net.
It was a goal reminiscent of Eric Cantona in his pomp and drew warm praise from Ferdinand, who has never doubted Rooney’s ability but is concerned about the expectations placed on his team-mate.
He said: “I am not surprised by what he did. Wayne is a fantastic footballer. He is a joy to play with and a joy to watch.
“I am so pleased he is on my side, because he is capable of doing things like that. But people must not forget he is still a young player and still on a learning curve.
“Sometimes, people expect too much of him. During this spell, when people have been questioning his goalscoring, Wayne’s workrate and team ethic have never wavered at all.”
Rooney’s contribution was even more remarkable, given the fact he spent the first hour on the bench.
Boss Ferguson was using a brief lull in the Premiership programme to give Rooney and Ronaldo, who has just returned from a short break in Dubai, some much needed rest.
Pompey boss Harry Redknapp admitted: “With 20 minutes remaining, I was sitting there feeling quite comfortable
“But, as we all know, Wayne Rooney is a top player, capable of doing special things. And the second goal was very special indeed.”
Fergie was left infuriated by a Larsson effort seemingly wrongly ruled out for offside and a header by Nemanja Vidic not given when TV replays showed the ball had crossed the line.
He fumed: “They talk about referees being full-time but it hardly matters if the linesman cannot do his job.
“The linesman was standing right there on the goalline, yet he cannot see a ball a foot over the line. Not inches, a foot. It was incredible.”

Ronnie reveals Real interest
January 29, 2007
CRISTIANO RONALDO is interested in a move to Real Madrid despite a gagging order from Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Portugese winker met with Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and assistant Carlos Quieroz on Saturday and was banned from speaking about a switch to Spain.
But Ronaldo made his feelings clear when offered the chance to see a mocked-up picture of himself in a Real Madrid shirt in a Spanish newspaper.
He said: "What day is that front page from? Let me see it."
The 21-year-old had earlier said: “I know of the interest of Real Madrid, but I can say nothing.
"I met with Carlos Queiroz and Alex Ferguson and they prohibited me to speak of Real Madrid.
"You must understand because I do not want any problem."
Ronaldo has been in sensational form this season netting 13 times in 29 matches and has attracted interest from Real and Italian giants AC Milan.

Ruud: Come to Madrid, Ron
January 26, 2007
RUUD VAN NISTELROOY has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to join him at Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants are gearing up to snatch Ronaldo, 21, from Manchester United with a £30million summer raid.
And Van Nistelrooy reckons Alex Ferguson faces a losing battle to keep Ronaldo if decides he wants out.
He said: “Great players are always welcome at Real Madrid — and Ronaldo is a fantastic player.
“United won’t give up Ronaldo very easily, definitely not. But it’s also in the player’s hands.
“If the player is aware of the situation and doesn’t want to stay any more and doesn’t commit himself then anything can happen.
“That will make a massive impact on the situation and it’s one for Madrid and Manchester United to sort out.”
Dutch hitman Van Nistelrooy, 30, bagged 111 league and cup goals for United in five years.
And Portuguese star Ronaldo is showing he has an eye for goal, too, with 13 so far this season.
Van Nistelrooy added: “This is Ronaldo’s best season so far at United. He’s scoring a lot of goals and playing very well. It will be difficult to get him but as I said, it it also in the player’s hands.”
Ronaldo publicly declared after the World Cup that he wanted to join Real, but Ferguson convinced him to stay.
Now the United boss is determined to head off renewed interest in Ronaldo from Real and Barcelona by tying the star to a new long-term contract.
And the fiery Scot will be furious with Van Nistelrooy adding to the hype in Spain that Ronaldo is on his way to the Bernabeu.
Ferguson and Van Nistelrooy had a major fall-out last season that ended with the Dutchman being shipped out to Real for £10.3m.
Part of Fergie’s problems were caused by a series of training-ground rows between the striker and Ronaldo.
But Van Nistelrooy insists he has buried his feud with Ronaldo and his only concern now is to play alongside the best players in the world for Real.
He added: “There wasn’t much that happened between us in Manchester. It was all blown up a bit.
“He’s still very young but already has a lot of experience. He’s played in the World Cup and European Championships as well as lots of big games in the Premiership and Champions League.
“Physically and technically, he has everything. Of course he is massive for the future of Manchester United and it is important that he will stay there.
“But if he is interested in a move then things could happen and we’ll see.”

Real told to forget Ronaldo bid
January 24, 2007
MANCHESTER UNITED have rejected Real Madrid's hopes of buying Cristiano Ronaldo as “fantasy”.
The winger has excelled for the Premiership leaders this season and is wanted by Europe's top clubs.
Ronaldo declared he wanted to quit Old Trafford for Spain after last summer's World Cup, where he got United pal Wayne Rooney sent off in England's defeat to Portugal.
But he stayed at United and has scored 13 goals this season to help them to the top of the Premiership.
And United No2 Carlos Queiroz has dismissed Real's chances of signing Ronaldo, insisting he is close to agreeing a new bumper contract.
Ex-Real boss Queiroz said: “It is natural that the media talk about Cristiano Ronaldo with Real Madrid.
“He is a great player and Madrid are a great club, but it is just speculation. They are fantasises.
“The football that he is playing in Manchester is an example that he is happy here and he has his head at United. He has talent and is the best in the world.
“In addition to that, we are speaking with him about renewing his contract.
“The club have a clear policy. It is not necessary that a player has to finish his contract before we think about renewing it.
“Ryan Giggs has been with us for 14 years and he has renewed his contract many times.
“This club do not need the agents to recognise the work of the players.
“We anticipate things ourselves and that is what we are going to do with Cristiano.”
Queiroz also revealed an insight into the dedication Ronaldo has demonstrated this season.
He added: “He is always the first to arrive at training and the last to go.
“Many times when the session has finished, we shower, eat and then we look at the pitch and he is still training.
“He is a player who has a divine gift. He was born to be the best in the world.”

Stewart to do Ron Ron
January 31, 2007
JORDAN STEWART cannot wait to take on Cristiano Ronaldo in a twinkle-toed dance-off tonight.
United flier Ronaldo has got some of the niftiest footwork in the Premiership but new Watford skipper Stewart is the self-proclaimed best dancer in the top flight.
And the defender plans to prove it by getting jiggy at the Theatre of Dreams.
Stewart showed off his latest routine at West Ham on Saturday after Anthony McNamee’s winner and has promised to wow the crowd with some break-dancing if United are kept quiet.
He said: “I thought it was pretty good and told Anthony I was the best dancer in the Premiership.
“It’s a pretty bold statement but I will be up against some pretty nifty footwork with Ronaldo on the pitch, so maybe that will help!
“Ronaldo is a great player, and is on fire at the moment but it is a battle that I relish. I don’t fear anyone.”

Ronnie rests before Prem run-in
January 27, 2007
CRISTIANO RONALDO will not play against Portsmouth today after being given an extended holiday.
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson let the in-form winger jet off to Dubai last week and wants to make sure his starlet does not burn out ahead of the title run-in.
And yesterday Fergie dismissed any chance of Portugal international Ronaldo, 21, joining Real Madrid.
He said: “We only sell the players we want to and we are not selling Ronaldo.
“He has developed so much as a player and a person since he has been here, we are not even thinking about selling him.”
And Old Trafford idol Eric Cantona also praised Ronaldo. He said: “He is a world-class player. He’s one of the family, the same as Wayne Rooney.”

From CR17
'My mates are jealous of me and Ronaldo'
So, you and Ronaldo, Spill!
We are dating, yes. He's lovely and I'm very happy, but I'm trying to keep it private so it's more special
Your mates must be jealous
Yeah, the bloke friends. They all want me to get tickets for the Man Utd games.
You dated Charlton player Marcus Bent too. Are you a wannabe WAG?
No, it's just that you meet a lot of footie players by going out in the same clubs and bars. Anyway, I hate shopping! I just want a bloke I can be myself with, so I can sit on the sofa in my pyjamas, with no make up on, eating chips.
Whats your top tip for pulling a footballer?
Just don't act desperate. If I go out with Marcus Patric it's the same. Girls follow him around - its a turn off.
How about you and sexy Aussie Marke Furze from Soapstar Superstar. A 'more' spy saw you going up to a hotel room with him...
No, no. I'm just good friends with him. We went in the lift together because we were both staying on the same floor in the same hotel.
Was Cristiano upset?
He knows the truth- I'm with him. Everything was fine.
How long have you been seeing him?
I'm not saying...
So is he a good kisser?
I'm keeping that a secret aswell.
What about in bed?
Stop asking!
How are, er, his ball skills?
You'll have to go and watch him play and find out.

Henrik's Ron and Roo tribute
February 02, 2007
HENRIK LARSSON reckons Old Trafford’s deadly duo are already on a par with Ronaldinho.
The Swedish striker has become an immediate cult figure with Manchester United fans just a month into his loan spell.
But Larsson, 35, believes Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney are the real reasons for his form.
The United hitman won the Champions League alongside Barcelona’s Brazilian star Ronaldinho and he said: “I’ve always said it is easy to play with great players and they are certainly among the great players.
“They’re already up there with the best I’ve played with.
“Wayne has got the vision and can score goals. So as long as you move when you have a player like that around you, then you are always going to get chances.
“I really enjoy playing with him and Cristiano. It’s frightening what they can do.
“I’ve been watching those guys playing on television and now I’m here playing alongside them and I’m really enjoying it.
"There are a few characters here and plenty of character in the squad as well, and that is always important. We have a great team spirit.”
Portuguese wing ace Ronaldo believes the title race has turned into a four-team battle.
United are six points clear of Chelsea, 11 ahead of third-placed Liverpool and 15 in front of Arsenal.
Ronaldo said: “If we had won against Arsenal, then the race for the title would have been between us and Chelsea.
“But Liverpool are coming strong and Arsenal are coming on as well — it is going to be a very difficult race.”

'I fancy ALL Hollyoaks babes'
February 03, 2007
MAN UNITED star CRISTIANO RONALDO appears to be treating GEMMA ATKINSON like a Premiership defender.
The silky-skilled player has teased her one way then the other — and has now left her completely floundering.
SHE says they’re still together. HE has told team-mates things with the Hollyoaks babe are “casual”.
And he revealed he fancies all her sexy co-stars in the Chester-based telly soap.
The Portuguese winker was defending himself against dressing room ribbing about her night out with lothario LEE RYAN and ageing Miami Vice star DON JOHNSON.
Ron’s team-mates teased him because she’d been out with “that plonker from Blue”, a former Bizarre Shagger Of The Year contender.
Ron and Gemma have been “dating” since meeting at a charity ball hosted by the Old Trafford team before Christmas.
But since the pair’s knee-trembling antics were revealed they haven’t been spotted together once.
A source at Old Trafford told me: “Ronaldo insisted to team-mates he was a single man and things were casual with Gemma. He claimed he wasn’t settled on one Hollyoaks actress — he liked them all.”
Gemma has claimed she and Lee are working on a secret TV project.
Her manager insisted last night she and Ron were still together.
I reckon Ron’s telling Gemma one thing and the lads another.
But who might Ron fancy? My experts have lined up some pert possibilities.
There’s ROXANNE MCKEE who plays Louise Summers, BRYONY SETH (Debbie Clarke), GEORGINA WALKER (Polly Clarke) and ALI BASTIAN (Becca Dean). Whoever he really rates, I sense a touch of the TEDDY SHERINGHAMs about this one.
West Ham striker Teddy can’t make up his mind about whether he is with Big Brother dimwit DANIELLE LLOYD or not.
Gemma rang Ron yesterday to get some reassurance about their fledgling relationship.
Of course, he said they are still together. She has blonde hair, big fake breasts and is, by all accounts, a very naughty woman.
I can’t think why a fame hungry actress would be worried about losing her millionaire football star boyfriend?

Gemma: I'm still Ronaldo's gal
04/02/07
SEXY Gemma Atkinson wants the world to know that footie star Cristiano Ronaldo is still her diamond Portu-geezer!
The former Hollyoaks babe, who was pictured on a recent night out with ex-Blue singer Lee Ryan, was horrified that some folk thought it meant they were an item.
In fact, things are going so well with her Ron that the Manchester United ace is soon taking her to meet his family on the island of Madeira.
Gemma, 22, told the Daily Star Sunday exclusively: “I’ve known Lee for years.
"We’re old friends and just happened to be working together so couldn’t resist going for a few drinks afterwards.
“Cristiano and I are still very muchtogether and I’m really looking forward to the future. Life couldn’t be better.”
A close friend of Cristiano, 22 tomorrow, said: “He is absolutely smitten. He has been telling his family about Gemma and they can’t wait to meet her.
"It’s something special for him to take a girl home. So things are quite serious between them.”

RONALDO IN SHOCK MADRID MEETING
WORLD EXCLUSIVE Man United star's chance encounter with Real officials in Dubai hotel
CRISTIANO Ronaldo met Real Madrid officials during his mid-season break in Dubai.
Sir Alex Ferguson gave his blessing to the trip after deciding to rest Ronaldo last weekend.
But United were shocked to discover - after a Sunday Mirror Sport investigation - that Madrid officials had been staying at the same hotel.
Quizzed by United yesterday, Ronaldo insisted it was a chance meeting and that he had bumped into the Real delegation as he was leaving the hotel.
But in Spain, sources close to Real Madrid claim that club officials outlined their future plans to Ronaldo and his agent, who was with him.
Real's delegation were in Dubai visiting a football academy in the area.
There is no suggestion that Ronaldo, who is 22 tomorrow, and Madrid were involved in illegal talks.
But the Old Trafford hierarchy are becoming tired by the continued specualation linking their young star with a summer move to the Bernabeu. In Spain Ronaldo is openly named as Real's prime transfer target for the summer.
Ronaldo has a desire to play in Spain one day and both Real and Barcelona have made it clear they would be interested in signing him.
Ferguson has insisted Ronaldo, who still has more than three years to run on his current contract, is not for sale.
Old Traf ford chief executive David Gill has said United would not even sell the Madeira-born ace for a world record £45m.

BARCA IN RONALDO SWOOP
CRISTIANO RONALDO'S future at Manchester United has become even more uncertain as Barcelona join Real Madrid in the hunt for the winger.
Barca ace Deco sent his Portugal pal a ‘come and join me' message that will send a chill through United fans.
Sport of the World told you last month that Real Madrid had made Ronaldo their top summer target. And United boss Sir Alex Ferguson now faces an even bigger task trying to keep his star.
Deco said: "Cristiano should come to Barcelona. He has a lot of talent and he's very young. But it looks difficult that United will let him go."
Midfielder Deco has the same agent, Jorge Mendes. Deco's claims came in the same week that Mendes' right-hand man Sergio Alves left open the possibility of Ronaldo leaving in the summmer, despite Fergie's dismissal of Madrid's interest.
We told you a fortnight ago that United had invited Mendes for talks over a new double-your-money deal to prolong Ronaldo's current contract which expires in 2010.
But Ronaldo's advisors look set to play hardball as they thrash out a new £100,000-a-week deal.

Ron(aldo) Atkinson
Date : 10.01.2007
GEMMA Atkinson is the 22nd sexiest babe in the world, according to the Star’s knowing readership.
Gemma is sexier than Jade Goody (36), Imogen Thomas (40) and Paris Hilton (5449). Gemma is less sexy than Angelina Jolie (1), Cheryl Cole (4) and Jennifer Ellison (14).
Gemma, who features in the soap opera Hollyoaks and is currently appearing on the pro-celebrity singing contest Soapstar Superstar, is mixing with some high company. One day she may scale the lofty heights of the Star’s Top Ten. As she is reported to have scaled Manchester United’s winking winger Cristiano Ronaldo.
Gemma arrives on the Star’s cover page bent over and dressed in a pair of spotty stockings and a red sting vest. Yesterday the Sun told us that Gemma has been “enjoying steamy training sessions” with the Portugeezer.
Gemma has already dated one footballer, Charlton striker Marcus Bent. And back in February last year she romanced footballer’s son Calum Best. "Calum really loves busty ladies. And he couldn't believe his luck when Gemma took his hand and led him into the toilet for a closer look,” said a source at the time. "They were all over each other in the back of the cab at the end of the night. And Calum couldn't get his key in the lock quick enough."
Now Gemma is with Ronaldo. Or not. “Hollyoaks Gemma on Ronaldo & sex,” advertises the Star’s front page, the teaser seeming to emerge from Gemma’s raised backside.
Inside, anther headline: “GEM: RON NEVER SCORED WITH ME.” Gemma, now dressed in a pink fishnet stockings and a shiny leather pelmet, says that she has been on a few dates with the footballer.
A “friend” tells us: “They are dating and nothing more. She’s not going to rush into anything so soon after splitting from Marcus.”
But what of the promised sex? Is Gemma letting Ronaldo hit the back, front and sides of her (fish)nets with a rare aplomb?
Gemma isn’t saying. Unlike much else about her, her romance with a top footballer is something she’s keeping under wraps...

Ron will not leave United
February 05, 2007
CRISTIANO RONALDO'S agent insists the winger is happy at Manchester United — despite growing interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Ronaldo, 22 today, was on the verge of quitting Old Trafford last summer after causing controversy with his antics following Wayne Rooney's red card at the World Cup.
But Sir Alex Ferguson persuaded him to stay and the Portuguese ace has repaid his manager's faith by spearheading United's title challenge.
And Jorge Mendes claims his client could not be happier with life in Manchester.
Mendes said: "It's normal that half the world is asking after Cristiano because he is delivering exhibition performances in every game.
"But Manchester United have repeated their intention not to sell him and I would do the same if I was a United director.
"It's no secret there is interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona.
"For us the matter does not exist and we are negotiating the renewal of his contract."

Ronaldo must join Barcelona
February 05, 2007
PHIL SCOLARI has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to join Barcelona.
Portugal coach Big Phil reckons the Manchester United winger must quit Old Trafford this summer to improve.
He blasted: “The basic education stage of his career is ending and I know Cristiano is ready for a change of atmosphere.
“Barcelona would hugely enjoy having Cristiano in their team because he would complement Ronaldinho perfectly — they have different characteristics.
“For Cristiano, the Barcelona climate would be important — most days are sunny and it’s hardly ever cold like England.
“That gives a player all the motivation he needs to train and play.”
Big Phil also took a swipe at Barca’s Spanish rivals Real Madrid.
Both clubs are willing to spend between £40million and £50m on Portuguese ace Ronaldo, who turns 22 today.
Brazilian Scolari added: “Cristiano needs to move somewhere where the team is an integral part of the club — not somewhere where the system is based on individual ‘heroes’ or ‘stars’.
“Moving to a club where there are four or five ‘stars’ who do their own thing is unworkable.”

Cristiano: Please don't boo me
February 06, 2007
CRISTIANO RONALDO says his perfect birthday present would be for rival fans to get off his back.
Ronaldo, 22 yesterday, said: “It would be good if they stopped booing me.
“When I played against Arsenal, nobody booed me. I hope nobody boos me again.”
Manchester United’s Portugal winger angered fans around the country for his World Cup antics, which included a wink at team-mates after Wayne Rooney had been sent off during the Three Lions’ quarter-final clash.
And he stirred up a new tumble storm on Sunday by winning a penalty during United’s 4-0 romp at Spurs.
Preparing for Portugal’s clash with Brazil at the Emirates tonight, Ronaldo added: “The goal and the assist against Tottenham were a birthday present I gave myself and they were a beautiful present.
“When I came to England I was very young but with all the experiences I’ve had, I’ve grown up quickly and I’m more mature. At 22, I’m not a kid any more.”

Ronaldo sparks doubt on future
February 07, 2007
CRISTIANO RONALDO has cast doubt over his future by refusing to pledge himself to Manchester United.
Ronaldo, a £40million target for Real Madrid and Barcelona, said: “I don’t know where I will be in the space of the next six months.
"For the moment, I’m only thinking about training well every day.”
Barca’s director of football Txiki Begiristain watched Ronaldo play for Portugal against Brazil in a friendly at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium last night.
United are prepared to double his £50,000-a- week salary in a new deal that would keep him at the club until 2012.
Ronaldo added: “The only thing I am sure about is I want to continue at the level I’ve reached and aim to improve even more.”
The winger, who turned 22 on Monday, also hailed Barca ace Deco.
He said: “He is one of the best players I’ve ever shared a team with.”

Keep your hands off Ronaldo
February 06, 2007
CRISTIANO RONALDO will be handed a whopping £26million contract to stay at Manchester United.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are both trying to entice Ronaldo with a £40m transfer.
But United’s No 2 Carlos Queiroz last night hailed the Portuguese wing star as football’s Michael Jordan and told the Spanish giants to forget any bids.
Queiroz said: “No, he will not be leaving us and, in addition to that, we are speaking with him about renewing his contract.”
He predicted Ronaldo, 22 yesterday, will have the same effect on sport as US basketball star Jordan.
Queiroz added: “I’ve seen many players throughout my career but I believe over the next decade Cristiano will be European football’s equivalent to Jordan in the NBA.
“The kid has a divine talent. I have never seen a player with this level of ability.
"He has technique, physique, athleticism and imagination and added to all this is his attitude in training and matches.
“He will be a star for the best part of 10 years.”
Portugal boss Phil Scolari told Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo Ronaldo would benefit by joining Barca.
And that would have especially angered Queiroz, who fell out with Scolari in dramatic style last November when the Brazilian coach claimed the United man was after after his job.
Ronaldo has a deal which runs until 2010 but United are now negotiating a bumper new five-year contract to keep him until 2012.
United want to double his current deal to put him alongside top earners like Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand on £100,000 a week.
Queiroz said: “The club have a clear policy. It is not necessary that a player has to finish his contract before we think about renewing it. Ryan Giggs has been with us for 14 years and he has renewed his contract many times.
“This club does not need agents to recognise the work of the players.
“We anticipate things ourselves and that is what we are going to do with Cristiano.”

Spurs face video rap
TOTTENHAM are facing a rap from Premier League chiefs after screening Cristiano Ronaldo’s video nasty to irate fans at White Hart Lane.
Spurs showed big-screen slow-motion replays of Ronaldo’s controversial tumble, which won a penalty from ref Mark Clattenburg in Manchester United’s 4-0 win on Sunday.
Just before the break, Ronaldo went down after Steed Malbranque’s challenge and the Portuguese winger duly opened the scoring from the spot.
Football chiefs are now ready to remind Spurs that clubs are forbidden from showing replays of contentious incidents to the crowd.
But Spurs full-back Lee Young-Pyo, who was close to the incident, said: “Steed and I didn’t touch him. I think he dived. I don’t know why he fell. It’s a great pity.
“I can’t understand why some players would do that. I’m disappointed.”

Ronaldo agent meets Mr Fixit
February 08, 2007
THIS is the moment Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent met Barcelona’s Mr Fixit.
The Manchester United star’s representative, Jorge Mendes, and Barca Director of Football Txiki Begiristain linked up at a London hotel on Tuesday.
They then sat together to watch Ronaldo in action in Portugal’s 2-0 win over Brazil at the Emirates Stadium.
United manager Alex Ferguson will be furious if their meeting leads to a bid from Barca for the Portuguese wing wizard.
The La Liga champions and fellow Spanish giants Real Madrid have made no secret of their desire to land Ronaldo in the summer.
Barca coach Frank Rijkaard clearly rates the 22-year-old and said: “Without a doubt, he is one of the most valuable players in world football.”
So valuable, it seems, that to get the player Barca would even top the world record transfer fee of £47million that Real paid for Zinedine Zidane if that is Rijkaard’s wish.
Club vice-president Ferran Soriano said: “The signing of Cristiano Ronaldo is a question for the coaching staff as they will decide. If it’s what they want, in terms of economic ability Barcelona are able to sign anyone.
“We are happy with the players we have and must continue following the criteria set by Begiristain and Rijkaard.
“We won’t sign anyone who has not been recommended by them. We are not driven to buy stars. We are interested only in players who will improve the team.”
Begiristain said he had done nothing wrong by meeting Mendes, who is also Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho’s agent.
He declared: “Jorge Mendes is my friend. I’ve known him years. He represents various players in our squad.
“This trip has been planned for some time. Barca has to be represented at these events and I’m doing my job, which is seeing matches.”
Begiristain was also at Old Trafford last night to check on another Barca target — Chelsea’s Frank Lampard in action for England against Spain.
Rijkaard is a huge admirer of Lampard, 28, who will be available for £8.5m at the end of the season if he snubs a new Blues contract.

Robson: Cristiano must stay
February 08, 2007
BRYAN ROBSON believes it is vital Manchester United persuade Cristiano Ronaldo to stay with the club.
The Portuguese winger has become the most valuable player in football after an outstanding season at Old Trafford that has seen him hit 17 goals already for club and country.
Ronaldo is a £40million summer target for Barcelona and Real Madrid, with bookies offering 9-4 he will play at the Nou Camp next season.
Yesterday SunSport exclusively revealed the 22-year-old had cast doubt over his future at United when he admitted he ‘didn’t know where he would be in the space of the next six months’.
Despite saying he is happy at United, Ronaldo has admitted he is attracted to Spanish football — and that will be music to the ears of Barca and Real.
But Old Trafford and England legend Robbo is horrified at the thought of him quitting United.
He said: “It is vital to keep him — he is crucial to United.
“I don’t see any reason why they would let him go.
“He is contracted to United and has been a massive player for them this season.”
Robson fears the boo-boys will drive Ronaldo out of the Premiership after his role in getting Wayne Rooney sent off at last summer’s World Cup quarter-finals — and his cheeky wink to the Portugal bench.
Captain Marvel added: “I think what may be unsettling him at the moment is that he loves it at United but fans everywhere he goes are booing him.
“Everyone keeps going on about the diving thing but he is playing terrific and maybe he feels he doesn’t deserve it.
“But as far as I’m concerned Alex Ferguson will do his best to make sure he remains a United player for the next few years. It’s very important.”
Despite Ronnie’s claims he is happy at Old Trafford right now he cannot hide his love for the game Spain.
The wing wizard said: “It’s a kind of football that attracts me but at the moment I don’t want to leave here.
“I’m at United, I’m happy and I want to continue. I’ve a contract with Manchester United.”
But that did not stop his agent, Jorge Mendes, cosying up next to Barca’s director of football Txiki Begiristain at the Emirates on Tuesday.
The pair watched Ronaldo play for Portugal in the 2-0 win over Brazil and Fergie would love to know what they were nattering about.
For now, at least, Ronaldo wants to concentrate on his dream of winning a Premiership title medal.
He has been instrumental in helping United open up a six-point lead over reigning champs Chelsea.
The lightning-fast winger is also the club’s top scorer so far this season with 15 top-flight goals.
And he said: “My dream of winning the league is very much alive.
“We have a good lead and the chances of winning the league this season are great — but nothing is guaranteed.
“We’re on the right path. We’re playing good football, we’ve been the most consistent team and if things continue that way, we can win the championship.”
Ronaldo has shown a great strength of character to perform to his high standards since the summer. In the last year he has had to deal with the death of his father and endure the ongoing World Cup rumpus.
He said: “I’ve coped with the pressure through working.
“There are times when there really is a lot of pressure but I always try to feel good, be on form and concentrate on the game.
“It’s important to have belief in yourself and your ability, which I have.
“Football is both mental and physical. There are days when you’re not good mentally and things don’t go well but it’s fundamental to be good physically on those days — and vice versa.
“I’m having a good phase and I hope to continue and maintain a high level in my career.
“I have improved every year and I want to be better still.
“I’ve worked hard and we can see the results. And I’m mentally stronger, as we saw at the World Cup. I haven’t changed anything, I’ve just added to it. In a lot of aspects I am more mature.
“It’s a case of using your experience to apply your skills in a game.
“For example, choosing the right moment to dribble, pass or help the team defend more.”
Growing up in Madeira he was beaten up by older kids for regularly embarrassing them with his dazzling skills.
Amazingly, some people told him he would never be a footballer because he was too small — he now stands 6ft 1in.
Ronaldo added: “I remember people saying I couldn’t be a professional because I was too short.”Then, between the ages of 15 and 18, I jumped up and became as tall as I am now.
“When I was playing in the street it was always against older boys who were bigger than me.
“I suffered because I had good ability. Sometimes when I played against the older boys and I tricked them, they didn’t like it and they beat me up.”
Ronaldo still gets frustrated by the rough treatment he gets from defenders.
And he denies he is a diver and believes referees just do not give him enough protection.
He said: “It’s a different game in Portugal. If you watch Portuguese matches on telly you’ll see that straight away.
“But the rules should be the same everywhere. If it’s a free-kick, the referee should give one. But here, referees chose to ignore fouls a lot of the time.
“Football is different here, with a different mentality. English football is very different.
“Portuguese, Spanish and Brazilian football is more technical.
“But I’m not going to stop trying to beat defenders in England.
“I don’t think I should change. I think the referees here favour defenders.”

Sir Alex raps Ron exit talk
February 10, 2007
ALEX FERGUSON believes Cristiano Ronaldo would be a fool to leave Manchester United.
Fergie is annoyed at the noises coming out of Real Madrid and Barcelona regarding his star player.
The United boss said: “He knows he can achieve everything he wants here.
“There might be an attraction abroad with the climate but what you get at Old Trafford is a packed house of 76,000 people every week.
“You don’t get that with the Spanish giants, only when it’s a big game — we fill out every week.”
Fears grew about a deal being done with Barca this week when Ronaldo’s agent was snapped with the club’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain.
But Ferguson said: “I think that was just the agent trying to make himself look good.”
Barca and Real are ready to bid whatever it takes to get Ronaldo, 22, and could even bust the world-record £47million Real paid for Zinedine Zidane six years ago.
But United are offering Ronaldo a new five-year contract worth £26m to keep him at the club until 2012.

Carvalho: It's Drog v Ron
February 10, 2007
RICARDO CARVALHO reckons the title race will be decided by a shootout between Didier Drogba and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Manchester United flier Ronaldo and Chelsea hitman Drog are joint top of the Premiership scoring charts, with 15 apiece.
And Blues’ Portuguese defender Carvalho, pals with both of them, said: “The performances of Didi and Cristiano will decide the destiny of the title.
"My two friends are having unbelievable seasons and there is more to come from them both.
“I believe it is still possible for Chelsea to win the title.
“There are still a great many matches to play and there could be some bad results for United in the coming weeks.
“Drogba is a key player for us. Chelsea always need his goals and, in my view, he is a more motivated striker now than he’s ever been while he has been at this club.
“Is this state of mind he can be the person who will be the most decisive in our season.
“But I know Cristiano well and his objective is to be the top scorer in Premier League. If he can do that he will be the key to United’s success."

Winker's a real twinkle toes star
February 26, 2007
SOCCER star Cristiano Ronaldo boasts he is Manchester United’s best DANCER — and DRESSER.
And the 22-year-old Portuguese ace — who winked when England’s Wayne Rooney was sent off — says Englishmen can only dance when they are drunk.
He told American Vogue magazine: “I don’t need to drink alcohol before I can dance. It’s natural to me. It’s what I do.”
Asked who is the team’s best dresser he said: “It is me, of course.” He said French striker Louis Saha was worst.
