WAGs in televised battle of the boutiques
Handbags set to fly as girls compete at running a clothes shop for new show

It is already being dubbed the "battle of the bling".

In a reality TV show that will turn their lives upside-down, ten footballers' WAGs will attempt to transform themselves from inveterate shoppers into successful shopkeepers.

It promises to be an epic confrontation.

The girl who sells the most clothes will get her own fashion range to promote - just like the queen of WAGs, Victoria Beckham.

WAGs Boutique, to be presented by June Sarpong, will be screened for three months from the end of January on ITV2.

Ten WAGs - wives and girlfriends - will be split into two teams of five to run two shops next door to each other, with the help of mentors including designers Scott Henshall and Hofit Golan.

And although the programme-makers claim the action will take place on London's famous Carnaby Street, the reality is very different.

The shops are tucked away on the edge of Soho in gloomy Marshall Street, where shoppers come in search of urban chic rather than glittery belts and handkerchief-sized tops.

"I certainly don't see them as any competition,' says Julian Took, 23, manager of neighbouring Concrete, whose clothes are favoured by the likes of David Bowie, Jude Law - and David Beckham.

"My impression is that they will sell expensive tat, lots of diamante on jeans and that sort of thing.

"The shops here have regular clients who want edgy, experimental clothes.

"But I guess it will make my cigarette breaks more interesting."

Worse still, the WAGs' premises have had a chequered past, with few tenants staying longer than six months to a year.

But if business does turn out to be dire, they could always buy from each other.

Wayne Rooney's fiancee Coleen McLoughlin and Alex Best were involved initially but have pulled out.

Here we present a form guide to the seven contestants signed up so far. It'll be handbags at dawn.

Michaela Henderson-Thynne

The 21-year-old girlfriend of Middlesbrough and England's Stuart Downing.

Cassie Sumner

Girlfriend of Chelsea's Michael Essien. Appeared on ITV's Poor Little Rich Girls and proved a party animal, so doubtful whether she has what it takes to succeed in business.

Charlotte Mears

The 21-year-old model is girlfriend of Tottenham's Jermain Defoe.

But has been sucked into the WAGs circuit where good friends include Carly Zucker, Joe Cole's girlfriend.

Heather Swan

Has been with Cardiff City's Michael Chopra for six years and they plan to marry next year, having been childhood sweethearts.

Has an HND in musical theatre and clearly sees programme as chance to raise her profile and emerge from her more famous partner's shadow.

Julie Phillips

Wife of West Brom striker Kevin Phillips and an expert on bling. Sports a £79,000 diamond engagement ring and confesses to having spent £4,000 on a dress for recent Bond premiere.

Managed a fashion store called If which went bankrupt, then trained as dental nurse.

Jadene Bircham

At 32, wife of QPR Captain Mark Bircham and former model has some business experience running her own modelling agency.

Admits to bag fetish but claims to prefer Zara and Joseph to Armani and Gucci.

Clearly in it to win it, she is known as a straight talker.

Nicola Tappenden

The 24-year-old model met West Ham striker Bobby Zamora in a nightclub.

They have now been together two years.

On the wall of their home, the couple have a 6ft wide picture of their best-loved possession - Nicola's bust.

She dresses her Highland terrier in pink girly clothes, even though it's a boy.

WAGs Boutique will air Tuesday nights at 9, starting on January 30, ITV2 in the UK.

Team #1 consists of Madeleine Bowden (Justin Hoyte, Arsenal), Michaela Henderson-Thynne (Stewart Downing, Middlesbrough), Julie Phillips (Kevin Phillips, West Bromich Albion), Krystell Sidwell (Mrs Steven Sidwell, Reading)and Nicola T (Miss Bobby Zamora, West Ham).

Their shop is called Bows, and is on 33 Marshall Street.

Team #2 has chosen the name Better Half for their shop - also on Marshall Street.

Heading up the team is Elle Isaac (Paul Ifill, Crystal Palace), Charlotte Mears (Jermain Defoe, Spurs), Cassie Sumner (Michael Essien, Chelsea), Jadene Bircham (Marc Bircham, QPR), Heather Swan (Michael Chopra, Cardiff)

The WAGs get their claws out for the cameras

Their multi-millionaire men are opponents on the football pitch. And now the girlfriend of England star Stewart Downing has transferred that rivalry to the High Street - by clashing with the partner of Chelsea player Michael Essien in a television programme where they run competing fashion stores.

The feud - which flared up in a tussle on a bus and a face-to-face row in the studio - will be featured on ITV show WAGs' Boutique, in which two teams of real-life footballers' wives try to sell more clothes than their rivals.

Michaela Henderson-Thynne, who dates Middlesbrough player Downing and was a member of the notorious WAGs - wives and girlfriends - at last summer's World Cup in Germany, has repeatedly rowed with former glamour model Cassie Sumner, the girlfriend of £70,000-a-week Essien.

Miss Sumner, 24, who once claimed to have shared intimate moments with Prince Harry in a nightclub, fled in tears after Miss Henderson-Thynne, 21, branded her 'rude' and lacking 'respect'.

Their battle began on a bus journey to prepare their shops near Carnaby Street in London's West End after Miss Henderson-Thynne, a law student, claimed she had arranged a meeting with fashion icon Vivienne Westwood.

When Miss Sumner was sceptical, her foe told her: "You'll be eating your words Cassie, I swear."

But Miss Sumner hit back, saying: "At least I've got some words. Are you really a law student or what? I really would never think you was."

The ex-model added, cattily: "You don't know anything about Vivienne Westwood. How can you stock something you have no bloody knowledge about."

She leaned over the seat in the bus and put her hand over her rival's face, saying: "Back in your face."

Asked about the row by presenter June Sarpong, Miss Henderson-Thynne said: "If I'd have had Cassie on my team I would probably have killed her by now."

The two women stood face to face, jabbing their fingers in the air at each other in the studio.

They were separated by their team-mates and Miss Sumner fled in tears. Sources say the pair now barely exchange words.

When the shops open, the pair will be working next door to each other. The two teams will design each shop, choose stock and run their accounts. They have 13 weeks to make the most money.

The other WAGs include Madeleine Bowden, girlfriend of Arsenal's Justin Hoyte, and Krystell Sidwell, wife of Reading's Steven Sidwell.

The show will screen on ITV2 from Tuesday at 9pm.

SUN Page 3 babe Nicola T is loving her job in WAGs Boutique – but reveals that tempers have already started to fray!

The ITV2 show finds rival teams of footballers’ wives and girlfriends running two clothes shops near London’s trendy Carnaby Street and battling to make the most cash.

“By the end of the first episode there’s already been a big, big bust-up,” reveals Nicola, the girlfriend of West Ham striker Bobby Zamora.

“It’s between Michaela Henderson-Thynne (girlfriend of Middlesbrough’s Stewart Downing) and Cassie Sumner (girlfriend of Chelsea’s Michael Essien).

“But I joined in at the end!"

She added: “Michaela said to Cassie, 'I’m glad you’re not on my team.' Cassie was obviously upset.

"But then I joined in and said ‘Yeah, I’m glad too’. I probably come across as a right bitch.”

But she reveals the babes have kissed and made up since then.

“I wish I hadn’t said it because I love Cassie now,” says Nicola. “I was a bit down today and she came over and gave me a really big cuddle.

“The row was pathetic, I don’t know what happened. We were all just being stupid little girls.”

Nicola revealed preparations for the shops’ opening have also been taking their toll.

“We are organising the launch party so it’s been a mental day. It’s been a really stressful couple of weeks.

“We’ve been filming constantly since December. It’s been manic."

The two teams will battle to see whose boutique can take the most cash and there is also an individual prize for the girl who makes the most sales.

"The strengths of our team are… me, obviously!" says Nicola.

"I’m so strong-willed and determined. Everyone here says they’ve never seen anything like it.

"I really think my team will win. We've got a great mix of girls and we work so well together."

Aside from Nicola and Michaela, the other members of the team at Bows boutique are Madeleine Bowden (Miss Justin Hoyte, Arsenal), Julie Phillips (Mrs Kevin Phillips, West Bromich Albion) and Krystell Sidwell (Mrs Steven Sidwell, Reading).

Their rivals next door at Better Half are Jadene Bircham (Mrs Marc Bircham, QPR), Elle Isaac (Miss Paul Ifill, Crystal Palace), Charlotte Mears (Miss Jermain Defoe, Spurs) Heather Swan (Soon-to-be-Mrs Michael Chopra, Cardiff) and Cassie.

And Nicola says that she is learning a lot from the show.

“I don’t know if I’d like to do more work on fashion after this. I keep saying I wouldn’t mind opening a boutique but we’ll just have to see how it goes.

“This is quite good because it’s like having a practice run – and it’s with somebody else’s money!

“Because if I did it for real and I messed it up then I wouldn’t be doing it again!”

Episode One

The WAGs have just two weeks to get their boutiques designed, stocked and open to the public.

An initial set back (with three of the ten girls leaving after the first evening) does nothing to ease the pressure. But after being sent back to school to learn some tricks of the trade, the luscious lovelies are ready for their first challenges - deciding what to call their stores and heading off on a buying trip to source some stock.

Team 1 decide on Bow (which they later change to Bows) whilst Team 2 settle for the football friendly Eleven (only to discover that someone else has already registered a shop in that name and are forced to change it to their second choice - Better Half).

But it isn't long before the perfectly maincured talons are out as Michaela and Cassie come to blows on a stock buying trip to Paris. The tension follows them all the way back to London, culminating in a petulant Ms. Michael Essien refusing to come out of the lavatory til Michaela apologises...!

With just one more week til the stores open, will the girls pull it off or will they be left wishing they were still the other side of the counter...?

IN-FIGHTING among the girls on telly's Wags Boutique has kicked off big time - over a kitchen.

Charlotte Mears's team have got the knives out after she was bought a £200,000 Pedini model, with a £30,000 fridge and just the six ovens, by boyfriend Jermain Defoe.

Our on-set spy says: "Charlotte's totally outdone Jadene Bircham, Heather Swan and the rest with this and there's a lot of bitching going on." Talk about a kitchen-sink drama!

Essien: Cassie's not my girl

A STAR of Wag’s Boutique does NOT have a footballer boyfriend — and that comes from the soccer player himself.

Glamour girl Cassie Sumner, 25, claims to be the girlfriend of Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien.

But a pal of the international last night insisted they are not a couple and the player has no idea why she says they are.

The spokesman for the Ghana star said: “Michael does know Cassie and sees her as a friend — but there is nothing more to it than that.

“He does not know where this has come from — he is 100 per cent single.”

Cassie is one of ten girls on the ITV2 show battling it out to run a successful clothes boutique in trendy West London.

She got on the show by claiming to be Essien’s other half. They were pictured together at a nightclub last month, but Essien, 24, insists there is nothing going on with the former £3,000 escort girl.

She also claims to have dated Emmerdale star Ben Freeman, Newcastle United’s Celestine Babayaro, Celebrity Love Island star Du’Aine Ladejo — and even PRINCE HARRY. She has sold kiss and tell tales on at least two former lovers.

An ITV spokesman said: “We thought Cassie and Essien were a couple.”

Fake Wag made to clean loos

DELUDED Cassie Sumner is being forced to clean the LOOS on Wags Boutique after The Sun exposed her as a fake.

The other footballers’ wives and girlfriends imposed the humiliating penalty after we revealed she is NOT an item with Michael Essien.

Cassie, 25, fibbed about her relationship with the Chelsea star to get on the show, in which two groups of five Wags set up and run rival clothes stores in central London.

After our story Cassie, who had been swanning around like royalty, was hauled before the ITV2 show’s bosses — who let the Wags decide if she could stay.

They said yes, but Jadene Bircham, 32, wife of QPR captain Marc Bircham, told Cassie: “You’re demoted to cleaning the toilets now . . . the princess thing is out of the window.”

After being exposed Cassie claimed she and midfielder Essien, 24, had split a few days earlier after a year together.

She added: “We have quite a temperamental relationship. I don’t really know if it’s final or not.”

Cassie, who also claims to have dated Emmerdale’s Ben Freeman and even PRINCE HARRY, was snapped with the Ghana star last month.

But his spokesman said: “Michael is 100 per cent single.”

WAGS Boutique: Copycats At Work!

The girls starring in ITV2′S WAGS Boutique are in the middle of yet another row.

Michaela Henderson-Thynne and Krystell Sidwell, who help run the Bows Boutique, claimed yesterday that their rivals in the Better Half Boutique are trying to copy and steal their ideas in a bid to win the show.

“Cassie Sumner and some of the other Better Half girls have been running in here spying on us and our designs,” Krystell told the Daily Star Sunday. “It is obvious they are worried about us. We’ve been so busy and are obviously doing well. It’s dirty tricks. They want to steal our ideas.”

With the WAGs getting ready to open their rival boutiques a short stroll from London’s fashionable Carnaby St, we caught up with Krystell Sidwell from the Bows boutique to find out how she and her fellow girls were getting on.

Your shops are nearly ready for the public. What have you and your team been doing in the lead up to the opening?
What haven’t we been doing…! We’ve just had so many things to do such as the stock, the launch and the guestlist but I’ve been loving it.

What about the décor of your store?
I’m absolutely thrilled with the décor of our shop. You can see it on the design prints but until it is in the boutique it is just another thing to tick off on our long list of ‘To Do’ items. When you actually see it, visually, in the store, all the hard work starts to pay off and you can see where all the stock is going to be displayed.

Who has been responsible for sourcing the stock for the boutique?
We’ve all chosen the stock but Nicola has been particularly responsible. She’s found designers, design ranges and gifts. I’ve got to whisper because one of the girls from Better Half [the rival boutique] is here and I don’t want her to find out what we’ve got…!

We've had to go to different appointments every day, making orders, re-arranging orders, making more orders. But it will be great once we’re open.

As you say, there is a lot of work required in running a fashion boutique. Have you done anything like this before?
No! The closest thing I’ve done is styling hair. I used to be a hairdresser so I’d make sure I was up-to-date with all the latest trends but I’ve never worked in a boutique.

What do you think the hardest part of it will be?
Everything’s going to be hard! I don’t think anything will be easy. Talking for me will be the easiest but I think the hardest thing will be selling the stock – getting people to try on the clothes and just the every day boutique style. But we’ll get used to it.

How have you been getting on with your launch party?
It’s been really hard because we’ve all been working to get the shops open without having a second to contemplate the launch. But it should be great. We’ve got entertainment, a magician, a chocolate fountain, cocktails and four nice men in bow-ties (no shirts because we’re Bows!) serving canapés. It should be a fantastic night.

Episode Two

The WAGs preferred lifestyle - parties, premieres and maxing out their boyfriends' credit cards - is behind them...at least for the next ten weeks and there is serious work to be done. But with just eleven days til the launch parties the girls are resorting to dirty tactics, seducing their decorator with the promise of free football tickets to get their boutiques painted in time.

Unfortunately, it's not enough and the boot is on the other foot as our decorator arrives with five sets of the latest fashion item - painters' overalls. Yes, it's time for the WAGs to get their hands dirty.

Bows make the most of it and despite Nicola calling their task-master 'the Simon Cowell of decorating' (well, she has a point), the girls reveal a fine attention to detail that demands his respect.

Next door, all isn't going so well. Better Half are finding the reality of business just a touch unglamorous and Cassie's cat-walk posing in decorators' casuals does nothing to help.

Will the more WAG-ish pursuit of party organising improve their spirits...?

Bows are on a roll and sit down to discuss tactics even calling in the assistance of a professional party organiser to help with the guestlist.

Back at Jadene's Better Half are sporting a slightly more relaxed attitude, getting drunk.

Still, it will all be alright on the night...won't it...?

With just one day to go til the launch parties, the pressure is starting to show. Over in Better Half the girls are angry because Heather has been working from home, leaving them to prepare the party. Whilst, even the usually calm Bows boutique is the location of some angry words as the girls struggle with their stock.

Fortunately, next day all is well and by 6pm, the launch parties are ready to start.

Despite failing to attract all the A-listers they'd invited, Bows could hardly be disappointed. As well as some of their other halves (Bobby Zamora, Steven Sidwell and Kevin Phillips), the celebs are out in force. Those walking the red carpet include Scott Henshall, Toby Anstis, Leilani and Gazza...!

Better Half almost lose some of their stars to the shop next door as The Cheeky Girls stand on the wrong side of the divide, leaving an anxious Cassie to chase them into her boutique.

But as the WAGs dance the night away, there is a problem brewing for Cassie. Her boyfriend, Michael Essien has told the tabloids that they were never an item and the TV producers want to speak to her.

An emotional Cassie decalres: 'We've been together for more than a year. He's bought me a car and I went to Germany for the World Cup. I've got proof that we were together.'

For once, the rest of her team have nothing but sympathy which is fortunate as the producers leave them to decide whether or not Cassie should stay.

It is a 'Yes' from the girls. However, Jadene can't help but point out: 'You'll be cleaning the loos now you're no longer a WAG'. (Somehow, we can't quite see that happening).

As the boutiques get ready for their first day of trading, will the public like what they see and who will be raking in the sales...?

Wag's Shop Burgled

Open a boutique in London, fill it with expensive gear, then pop it on telly...

So don't be too surprised when it gets broken into.

That's just what happened to the Better Half shop featured in the reality TV show Wag's Boutique.

The store was targeted by a "crack team of boutique raiders", who police say operate around London's posh Bond Street.

The thieves used motorbikes to speed down to the shop. They then smashed down the door before making away with their Wag swag.

Yet, the crooks weren't too hot with their designers...

Whilst they pinched a couple of designer handbags, they left the most expensive item behind - a £4,150 Antonio Beardy jacket.

Police believe they were disturbed before they could steal more of the clobber - which is being sold for charity.
