Welcome to the Cheshire Wives
At first sight, the village of Alderley Edge appears quite normal, ordinary even. There is the usual smattering of shops: a stationer, a couple of clothes boutiques, a butcher, a hairdresser. But things aren't quite as they seem. The Est Est Est restaurant, for example, appears to be part of a pizza and pasta chain, yet a group of drinkers at the bar are enjoying Cristal champagne (£300 a bottle).

Over the road at the Alderley Bar & Grill, a red Bentley Turbo with the personalised number plate Xaviar pulls up alongside a grey Aston Martin and a black Lamborghini. Inside, a man with a suit that is slightly too shiny and hair that is slightly too black has a glass of champagne in one hand and a bowl of chips in the other. A blonde with long caramel-tinted legs is hanging on his every word.

Along the way is a Barnardo's charity shop. The front is just like any other Barnardo's. Step inside, however, and you could be in New Bond Street, with its minimalist decor, fashionable wooden floor and rails of Versace, Armani and Cavalli.

Glitz and showiness is everywhere, yet, paradoxically, it takes some time to reveal itself to the outsider. And now to the rest of the world.

It was only a matter of time before the bling capital of Cheshire was given its own TV show. Goldplated, which starts next week on Channel 4, follows the flashy White family. The head of the household, fifty-something John, dumps his feisty wife Beth for glamorous 23-year-old Cassidy, a gold-digger who snares him by becoming pregnant.

But is Alderley Edge really like this? You bet. According to one well-informed local, the place is a hotbed of sex and adultery among the millionaire set: 'The show sounds like a watered down version of what it's like.'

Summer is the worst. At this time, says the source, wives decamp to their holiday mansions along the coast at Abersoch, north Wales, with the children.

Their husbands stay in Alderley Edge. Young women in the poorer districts outside the village swoop down on bars such as the Bubble Room and the Alderley Bar And Grill in the hope of ensnaring - although just hanging around the bar is usually enough - a millionaire.

Their chances are high. Alderley Edge is said to have more millionaires per square mile than anywhere else in the country. The men are happy to oblige.

'It's a trade off,' says the source. 'The wives have the mansion and the 4x4 and the villa in Spain, and as much jewellery as they could wish for. They turn a blind eye to what goes on.

'Meanwhile, you've got all these young women on the prowl who want to ensnare the men. The men don't even have to chat them up or try to be charming. They've got the money and that's all that matters.

'One girl of 22 I know is engaged to a man in his mid-40s. She came here to pull a millionaire and succeeded. She used to have dyed platinum hair and wear cheap, obvious clothes, but her chap has seen she has the best hairdresser, clothes and jewellery. She looks quite classy now.

'Before she arrived on the scene, her fiance had been married and divorced and then engaged to another young woman who left him for another millionaire. That lady had four hen parties before she finally got married.'

'Gossip about affairs'

Rebecca Allen, a 20-year-old student at the London College of Fashion, and Lucinda Geary, 21, who is studying psychology at Chester University, both grew up in Alderley Edge.

'There is a lot of gossip about affairs and stuff,' says Rebecca, whose father runs a construction company, 'and because everyone knows each other, the news spreads like wildfire.'

Another woman claims that swinging has become de rigueur in Alderley Edge. 'I know a few couples who have investigated it,' she says. 'I was very surprised when they told me but I think some of the ladies do get a bit bored round here.'

The so-called 'golden triangle' is made up of Alderley Edge - which takes its name from the wooded escarpment hovering above the Cheshire plain - Wilmslow and Prestbury.

The locals, however, tend to think of the golden triangle as Alderley Edge, Abersoch and Marbella. 'It's weird, nobody ever goes anywhere other than these three places,' says one resident.

There are three Cheshire sets: the old established families, the NCNRs (North Cheshire Nouveaux Riches) and the footballers and their WAGs. They have only one thing in common - money. As one local put it tartly: 'You've got old money, new money and funny money.'

Those who represent 'old money' - the Duke of Westminster's seat is in Cheshire - find the nouveaux riches and their ostentation a strange breed.

Conversely, the nouveaux riches - generally consisting of self-made businessmen - aspire to have the 'class' of the established families. Many of the men take up polo at Cheshire's Tarporley club to try to 'get in' with the set.

Their wives accompany them in their finest Roberto Cavalli and bling, while the ladies from 'old money' turn up in jeans and torn jumpers.

Footballers 'mix with no one but themselves'

Then there are the footballers and their WAGs. David and Victoria Beckham used to reside here. Wayne Rooney and Coleen McLoughlin live in nearby Prestbury.

Current residents of the village include Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand, and Liverpool's Peter Crouch. The footballers mix with no one but themselves.

The wives of the self-made millionaires have to fend off younger rivals. As they don't work, they can devote much of their time to a strict maintenance and anti-ageing regime. By day, Alderley Edge Woman dresses down in Rock & Republic jeans and a designer jumper or T- shirt. She has Louis Vuitton bags in every shape and size to choose from.

Once the children are at school, she heads to the gym for a workout. Many ladies go to the one at Mottram Hall hotel a few miles outside the village. It's tiring, so afterwards she will want a light lunch at Est Est Est or the Bar & Grill.

The afternoon is devoted to shopping, facials, tanning, blow-dries and manicures. A wife might spend a couple of thousand pounds on Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli at Garbo in Wilmslow. She stocks up on bling at Harrington & Hallworth jewellers on the High Street in Wilmslow, which sells Cartier, Gucci, Chopard and Bvlgari.

Although publicly the stores frequented by the nouveau wives and the WAGs like to give the impression that client privacy is paramount, that's not always the case.

'I was working at one shop when Coleen McLoughlin came in, while a swarm of photographers waited outside,' a former employee says. 'After she made her purchases I offered to take her car keys and move her car to the back of the shop so she could pack her bags in private and drive off.

'Coleen was delighted but my boss wasn't. I'd robbed them of a picture in the papers of Coleen holding their boutique's bags. Next day I was sacked.'

After buying her daily designer purchase, the wife will head to a local beauty salon. Many spend hundreds of pounds a month on facials and Botox. One Wilmslow salon says it has 600 women on its books. Many pay between £250 and £400 for Botox injections every three months.

All-over body skin peels, at £400 a go, are also popular. Others visit once a week for a £300, four-hour session comprising manicure, pedicure, facial and massage.

'Our main clients are married ladies who do not work and are looking to pamper themselves during the day,' says a member of staff. 'These are ladies whose husbands work and they are bored. Some feel a bit hollow inside, unloved and lonely.

'We make them feel good and important and loved. It is a type of therapy in that sense. We give them privacy and are entirely confidential, so if they want to discuss their partner's infidelity they can.'

The hairdresser's of the moment is The Style Lounge, where David Beckham used to have his hair cut. A lot of the footballers continue to come here, devoting almost as much time to their hairdos as the WAGs.

The Cheshire wives come in two to three times a week for a blow dry, on top of their regular cut and colour. Long, straight blow-dried hair, with just a few layers, is the preferred style for women.

'Women here are down-to-earth and understated'

In the past few weeks, however, there have been numerous requests for the Victoria Beckham bob. 'The women here are down-to-earth and understated,' says a staff member.

Tanning is important to both the men and women. At the SK Sun Spa, a member of staff says both sexes come in for sunbed sessions three times a week, or for a spray tan once a week.

Although the men work for their millions, they also find time to devote to leisure and shopping. At the Aston Martin dealership in Wilmslow recently, a sharp-suited man left his golf bag on the black leather sofa inside as he inspected a silver Vanquish Coupe on sale for £177,000.

Golf is popular and can cause problems. 'I dumped my husband because he was spending too much time on the golf course and not enough time on me,' says a 42-year-old brunette.

'We split two years ago but I made sure I got the house. In the past, he'd had an affair so he did not contest me having the property.

'I am seeing a man now who is a little bit younger than me, though I won't tell you how much! He is a property developer in Manchester and is keeping me in the style to which I am accustomed.'

With so much to pack in during the day, it is little wonder that the wives rarely find time to cook. They prefer to dine out, though when they do host a dinner party they go to butcher Alan Jackson for his rib of beef and homemade beef wellington.

Christine Slee, 43-year-old events organiser for The Dinner Club in Chester, went to such a party recently. 'It was a barbecue and the host was serving champagne with the burgers,' she says. The obsession with champagne is almost unnatural. In Oddbins they sell more than 150 bottles a week.

The lines have been drawn between Wine Rack and Oddbins, and they are locked in a bitter champagne price war.

The fizzy stuff is even in the food. The seemingly old-fashioned bakery sells strawberry and champagne cheesecake; the Alderley Cheese Wedge has a white Stilton with strawberry champagne.

Traditional dishes such as black pudding are rare. You are more likely to find dishes such as 'smoked turkey with blueberry mayo on lightly-toasted brioche' at Pinks restaurant, whose decor is literally pink all over. The Bubble Room, which sells Cristal rosÈ at £300 a bottle, has recently put ostrich and kangaroo on the menu.

You can't become a member of the Alderley Edge set unless you are very rich. Crispin Harris, director of real estate agents Jackson, Stops & Staff, says he has many celebrity clients (mainly footballers and Coronation Street stars), but the most wealthy and frequent customers are businessmen.

'Our average property sells for about £1.5 million, as we specialise in mansions,' he says.

One house under construction is Cloud End, a 10,000 sq ft property set in one-and-a-half acres, with an indoor pool and a tennis court. It is on sale for £6 million.

Small change for the Champagne Charlies lined up in the bars of Alderley Edge.

Goalie dumps wife for club girl

FORMER England goalkeeper Ian Walker has ditched his stunning wife of 13 years — for a dancer.

The Bolton stopper, 35, left heartbroken Suzi after falling for his lover in a club while on holiday with pals in Las Vegas.

He “vanished” for six weeks, failing to call home before admitting his affair with the American dancer to former Page 3 girl Suzi, 33.

Suzi — on whom TV’s Footballers’ Wives character Chardonnay was based — was willing to forgive and forget.

But then former Spurs keeper Walker dropped the bombshell that he wanted to bring Samantha Thurman, 34, from Miami, back to Britain.

Now Suzi, mother of their daughter Sophie, eight, is filing for divorce.

She told The Sun yesterday: “I am devastated.”

A close pal of the former golden couple said: “Suzi is still in love with Ian. They had been together since he had nothing but he has hurt her so badly.

“She has tried to work it out but Ian won’t listen. It is so painful for Suzi. Ian has been an absolute pig.”

Walker fell for the dancer on a boozy night out.

The pal revealed: “He went to the US to look at property investments. But he vanished for six weeks and didn’t even call home.

“Eventually he sheepishly got in touch and said he had fallen for someone. Suzi’s world caved in.”

Walker has moved out of the £2million family mansion in Cobham, Surrey, and is renting a flat in Manchester.

Playing away ... Walker, inset with Suzi, has moved out of the family's £2m Surrey mansion

The pal said: “Ian’s just given up on 13 years of marriage. He hasn’t even seen his daughter since May.”

Suzi and Walker previously split for a year after he had a one-night stand with ex-EastEnders star Danniella Westbrook.

HE'S BY JAM'S SIDE ?

JAMELIA and Darren Byfield appear to have put their marriage troubles behind them.

The pair looked a picture of happiness as they stepped out at a Cosmopolitan party on Tuesday night.

The Superstar singer was devastated a month ago, after model Jaclyn Evans, 20, claimed she'd had a two-month affair with Millwall striker Darren.

But our mole at the party said: "They looked very much in love and must have worked through their problems. Darren didn't leave her side." Bless...

Jav a go Jamelia lets fly

November 11, 2006

JAMELIA has blown her cover as the nice girl of pop — by firing a volley of abuse at JAVINE HYLTON.

I’m looking forward to a superb bitch fight, as I bet Javine will hit back.

Jamelia let rip after reading my story about how Javine betrayed pal ALESHA DIXON by bedding her hubby MC HARVEY while starring with him in London musical Daddy Cool.

The singer snarled: “I’m not normally the type of person to slate someone but I’ve really got a lot of animosity towards that girl because she’s a relationship ruiner.

“Alesha is a beautiful, fantastic person and her husband has been sleeping with Javine behind her back. Javine is a slag. I have no time for her.”

I wonder if Jamelia got her claws out because she is feeling extra sensitive right now?

A model called Jaclyn Evans recently claimed she’d had an affair with Jamelia’s fiance, Millwall footballer DARREN BYFIELD.

Jamelia is standing by her man. Meanwhile, Javine and Harvey have become hate figures since I exposed them earlier this week.

They were caught in bed together by Javine’s record producer boyfriend KARL GORDON.

I think most people will agree with Jamelia’s remarks about the cheats.

I just hope they won’t come back to haunt her.

WAGs: The style secrets

January 30, 2007

KER-CHING! Deep in the heart of London’s Soho, cash registers are ringing and it’s all down to the WAGs.

But not due to their awesome spending power for once. This time the gorgeous girls dating Britain’s top footballers are behind the till, not in front of it.

WAGs Boutique (9pm tonight, ITV2) pits ten WAGs against one another as they compete to run successful rival fashion boutiques.

They’ll be designing, stocking and serving in the two stores, but what can we expect to find on the shelves?

Is there such a thing as WAG style and what are the fashion rules to follow for would-be WAGs?

To answer these questions, we called the original WAG boutique, Cricket in Liverpool.

Their PR Lorraine Mcullagh reckons there’s no one WAG look: “A lot of our customers like quite different styles – there’s no particular uniform.”

“Chloe shift dresses and Louboutin heels are our biggest sellers at the moment but the girls all take a look and make it their own.”

So was Cricket the inspiration for the show in the first place? “Well, I couldn’t say but I do know that some of the girls want to come up and visit to get ideas!”

No particular uniform, Lorraine says. But we beg to differ. Click on the images above for our guide to what the WAGs wear.

Ah yes, the star-studded party. Always a tricky one for the WAG but when in doubt, flash some flesh. Or in Page 3 favourite Nicola T's case, go semi-naked.

This Gucci style is an eye-watering treat that shows off her fab figure.

It's not hard to see why Nicola says Posh is her style icon - Mrs B loves cheeky flash-fleshing frocks too.

Two key WAG trends are at play here: the art of imitation and the flaunting of a high-street must-have.

As Sun fashion writer Chloe Wood explains, “Mixing in high street finds will earn a WAG bonus points so long as she teams them with designer accessories”.

Think dress by Topshop, heels by Christian Louboutin.

As for the imitation, Cricket's Lorraine Mcullagh says they always tell their WAG clients if another girl has chosen the same outfit for a bash they're both going to.

Coleen and Krystell Sidwell both look fab in this French Connection dress but Col wore it first.

A WAG should always look as though she's just stepped off the plane from Barbados.

Fantasy Tan 'technicians' were flown out to Baden-Baden during the World Cup so our girls could look their best before they hit the town.

Or perhaps to hide their red faces when we crashed out of the Cup so spectacularly and the blame was laid at their door.

A word of warning though for the over-keen applier (see Michaela, second from right, above): the look you're trying for is St. Tropez not Mt. St. Helens.

Another secret of the WAG look is the dress that clings to every super-trim curve it finds.

If you're going to have an athletic husband, you have to look in good nick yourself. Cue hours of yoga, boxercise or, Cheryl's personal favourite, Vacunaut.

Mrs B and Mrs C are perfect examples of the polished WAG, pictured above looking foxy last summer.

Note the bronzed pins, perfectly tousled hair, manicured nails and flawless silhouette - there'll be no VPLs for these ladies.

The WAGs should really be called the BAGs … because they just love them. From the Fendi B (Coleen’s got five at over a grand a pop) to the Birkin, these ladies won’t leave home without a killer It bag.

Cricket’s Lorraine Mcullagh reckons this season’s must-have is the Stam (above) by Marc Jacobs – a snip at £765.

The WAG dream made flesh. Posh guns it down the catwalk for pal Roberto Cavalli.

Sun fashion writer Chloe says, "The more designers a WAG knows the better her chances of outshining a fellow WAG.

"Lower league WAGs may start off with Lipsy, but when they reach the Premiership it's Roberto Cavalli on speed dial that wins points."

The envy of every WAG worth her salt, Victoria has acted as muse to Mr C for the past couple of years and he designed her a bespoke dress worth over £30,000 for the Beckham pre-World Cup party.

Note again the toned, tanned pins, big hair and killer heels.

So much thought has gone into this little lot, it's a wonder she got out the door.

Michaela Henderson-Thynne is one to watch on the new show and she wears her WAG credentials on her sleeve in this outfit.

Sun fashion writer Chloe says, "WAGs love their accessories - and the bigger the better.

"HUGE designer sunnies, even in winter, heels, blinging jewellery and of course the latest designer handbag are essential."

Wedding bells for Robben

THE HAGUE: Chelsea striker Arjen Robben is set to marry his high school sweetheart Bernadien Eillert in the northern Dutch city of Groningen on June 9, his father told the ANP news agency on Friday.

The marriage will be a civil ceremony conducted in the city theatre of Groningen.

The pair had already announced their plans to marry at the end of the football season in September last year, but had not settled on a date or a location
