Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon scored as Tottenham beat Chelsea in the league for the first time in 16 years, winning 2-1. Chelsea also had captain John Terry ejected late in the second half.

Lennon, an England winger, notched the winner at Tottenham's White Hart Lane stadium early in the second half. Claude Makelele gave Chelsea the lead before Dawson tied it later in the first half.

Chelsea, the two-time defending champion, missed a chance to tie Manchester United atop English soccer's Premiership on points. United leads Chelsea by three points and Bolton by eight.

Arsenal squandered an opportunity to go third, losing 1-0 at West Ham, and Aston Villa improved to sixth with a 2-0 victory over Blackburn. Tottenham, now unbeaten in eight games, improved to 10th.

Makelele scored only his second league goal for Chelsea in more than 100 appearances when he lashed a 25-yard volley past goalkeeper Paul Robinson in the 15th minute. Robinson limited the damage soon after by stopping Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard.

Chelsea, which drew with Barcelona 2-2 in the Champions League last week, conceded in the 25th minute when Dawson, a defender, headed a Jermaine Jenas free kick into the corner.

Lennon, recently back from injury, finished off Robbie Keane's cross in the 52nd minute. Keane made the pass after going around defender Khalid Boulahrouz.

Terry, England's captain, was sent off for the first time in his first-team club career after collecting a second yellow card in the 72nd minute. Terry was given his second card after appearing to say something to referee Graham Poll following a scrum in Tottenham's penalty box.

Chelsea piled on pressure even after Terry's dismissal, with Dutch winger Arjen Robben hitting the post with a curling effort in the 87th minute. Tottenham hung on through four minutes of injury time.
