Old article on Jermain and Charlotte:
Charlotte and Spurs star are a winning team

A Burwell woman has been rubbing shoulders with the likes of Victoria and David Beckham after capturing the heart of England and Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

Model Charlotte Meares, a former pupil at Burwell and Bottisham village colleges, didn't even recognise the football star when she first met him in a nightclub about eight months ago.

But now Charlotte, 21, lives in Chigwell, Essex, with Jermain and befriended the other girlfriends and wives of the England football team in Portugal earlier this month, as part of the build-up to the World Cup.

She was on the guest list for the Beckham's star-studded World Cup send-off party in Hertfordshire on Sunday Jermain is on the stand-by list for the England squad.
Her mum Sandra Clinton, who lives in Railhouse Close, Burwell, said she was not worried about the media attention going to her daughter's head.

"It's not changed her at all, she's very down to earth and she comes home a lot and I straighten her out," she said.
"We're just a pretty ordinary family and I think Jay is as well, he may be high-profile and people come up to them and ask for his autograph when they go out but I think generally they have a pretty normal life really."

Mrs Clinton added: "Charlotte enjoys the limelight she's quite a bubbly girl and she seems to take everything in her stride, nothing seems to phase her.

"She goes to every game that he plays in, they leave together and do everything together."

Mrs Clinton, a hairdresser, and her husband Bill have met Jermain on several occasions and she described him as "a very nice chap" but said the most important thing was that her daughter was happy.

Charlotte was a member of Newmarket theatre group Nomads and worked at Oasis in Cambridge for three years, before leaving to pursue a career in modelling.

Since then, she has appeared on magazine front covers including Prima and Baby magazine and took part in Bravo television show Cat Fight and quiz show Bikini Beach.

The couple met when they were both doing promotion work and Jermain asked Charlotte out for lunch.

Mrs Clinton said her daughter had done less modelling work since she became involved with Jermain.

Charlotte has an older sister, Rachel, 24, who is getting married in Italy in September.

Charlotte will be her bridesmaid.

WAG gets her 200,000 kitchen - complete with 6 ovens

She is better known for glamour and high fashion than haute cuisine.

But that was no reason for 21-year-old model and WAG Charlotte Meares to spare the expense when it came to planning her new kitchen.

Charlotte, whose boyfriend is Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, has splashed out 200,000 on the kitchen for the 3 million home the couple are having built in Hertfordshire.

No expense spared: Charlotte in her 200,000 kitchen

And she has packed it with gadgets - even though virtually all the 'cooking' she has done up to now is preparing the occasional Pot Noodle.

She said: "To be honest I used not to cook - I used to eat lots of Pot Noodles - but when you are living with someone you have a good reason to get interested in preparing meals.

"My favourite meal is lasagne with salad and garlic bread - I can cook that, and Jermain loves anything with pasta.

"I'm experimenting with meals, like lamb and chicken. I like it."

Charlotte, a vivacious blonde who is currently starring in the television show WAGs Boutique - where two teams of women vie for customers in two rival clothing shops in Soho - is determined she and her guests will be well catered for.

Her kitchen will have two huge wine coolers -each holding 132 bottles of wine - and an enormous 6ft4in tall, 4ft wide American Sub-Zero fridge, known as the Rolls-Royce of refrigeration because of its quality stainless steel interior.

She also has no fewer than six ovens. On a back wall, in separate 6ft tall units, are two conventional Gaggenau ovens, a Gaggenau steam oven and a Gaggenau combination cooker, which can also function as a microwave.

In a different part of the kitchen, beneath a hob, are a further two conventional Wolf ovens.

In case that isn't enough, she also has two warming drawers.

The kitchen also boasts three stainless steel sinks and two dishwashers and will be fitted with two 42in plasma television screens so Charlotte, Jermain and their friends can watch all the big matches.

Charlotte resisted trendy bright colours and opted instead for elegant muted greys, beiges and chocolate brown.

She said: "I chose my favourite two designs and then asked Jermain to make his choice. He chose the one that was actually my first choice, too.

"My favourite bit of the kitchen is the massive fridge - I love the idea of having so much food and drink in there - and I really like the curved design of the breakfast bar."

Charlotte made no mention of roasting, which has been a somewhat controversial preference of some other football stars - usually involving topless models.

Charlotte's kitchen comes from luxury Italian designer Pedini. It will be fitted into an enormous entertainment room - at 926sq ft it is five times the size of a normal kitchen and larger than many two-bedroom flats.

Pedini, founded 51 years ago by designer Ennio Pedini, describes itself as "an elite Italian kitchen manufacturer" and is known for its trademark curved worktops.

Charlotte is said to have become enamoured by the unusual designs after learning that actor Leonardo DiCaprio and footballers Ronaldo and Hernan Crespo each had a Pedini kitchen in their homes.

The base units are covered in black Pedini gloss, which features seven coats of lacquer. The finish is so special it must be polished and buffed by hand. The doors work on what is known as a complinari system, where they sit flush with each other but instead of opening outwards, adjust to slide over each other.

The breakfast bar - where Charlotte hopes her girlfriends will sit supping wine and chatting to her as she cooks - is topped by Moro oak from Africa, deeply stained to look almost black.

The rest of the work surfaces are made of a material known in the trade as 'technical stone'. These are man-made surfaces designed to look like granite. They have fine shards of glass embedded in them so that they appear to twinkle.

On the back wall, a special 'low-iron' glass splash back, designed to remove any hint of the green tint which appears in ordinary glass, provides a 2ft buffer between the base and wall units.

The floor is covered in pale grey limestone slabs.

No detail has been overlooked.

Subtle features include kitchen cabinets with discreet finger grooves instead of handles and cooking hobs integrated flush into the worktop. Gadgets such as coffee machines are incorporated into cabinets so nothing clutters the work surface.

Charlotte is supervising the fitting of her kitchen and is, not surprisingly, delighted with it.

She said: "We both have very large families and it'll be really nice when they come over - we have lots of room.

"We hope to move into our new house in the summer. It's very exciting and I guess we'll have a big party with both families."

Charlotte is clearly more than just a pretty face - she has A-Levels in psychology, performance studies and sociology - but has happily embraced the WAGS lifestyle. One of her good friends is Carly Zucker, Chelsea star Joe Cole's girlfriend.

Charlotte met 24-year-old Defoe 16 months ago. At the time she didn't realise he was a famous footballer. She moved into his current home in July last year.

The managing director of Pedini UK, Darren Miller, applauded the couple for their good taste.

He said: "Their choices are very tasteful. They have chosen a lot of cookers but I understand that they intend to do quite a bit of entertaining - so they'll need them."

Charlotte is said to have become enamoured with the unusual designs after learning Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio had a Pedini kitchen in his home

Not just a pretty face: The 21-year-old model has three A-levels including one in psychology

The new Nigella Lawson? Charlotte is currently "experimenting" with lamb and chicken-based meals.

JERMAIN Defoe proposed to girlfriend Charlotte Meares on Valentine's Day with a 63,000 ring.

The tearful Tottenham and England star got down on one knee at a surprise dinner.

Charlotte, 21, star of ITV2's WAGs Boutique, told The Mirror: "It was the best day of my life. It was so romantic. The ring is perfect.

It's so big on my finger."

Jermain, 24, bought it in November but waited for the right moment - and was nervous about whether she would like it.

He drove Charlotte to secluded Brocket Hall in Herts, for extra privacy booking an entire section of the restaurant at 10,000.

Six couples were at the other end of the room - all proposing.

One diner said: "Charlotte screamed when she saw the gigantic ring and blubbed all through her chocolate dessert. Everyone clapped."

Jermain's spokesman said: "They are engaged. Jermain loves Charlotte and decided to make this commitment."
